SIT 3D
Tourist Information System.
French St. Jacques Way

The application is a tourist information system for all municipalities through which the French St. Jacques Way passes, with the following features:

  • Realistic 3D terrain visualization, as well as thematic maps with the possibility of mixing them with the realistic image of the terrain.
  • Specific representations of tourist elements provided by the Galician Regional Tourism Ministry, for example: St. Jacques Way, cottages and hostels, hiking trails, villages, areas with views of interest, historical and artistic monuments, etc.
  • Visualization of  information about each of the tourist elements represented
  • Individual location of tourist elements
  • Free Navigation on the terrain
  • Automatic flight routes
  • Interactive information sheets associated with each item

Digital Terrain Model (DTM).

Due to the large size of the MDT, about 400MB, it is necessary to find alternatives to allow for transmission and viewing via the network. This analysis was performed and preliminary study of different techniques and algorithms that allow fragmentation and incrementally download from the application.

In addition, due to the different characteristics of users' computers is also required to bring the quality the MDT in each case in order that the application provides good performance and interactivity regardless of the power of each computer. In this case, began developing a system that adapts the quality of MDT as a function of the power of each computer.

User Interface: extension and redesign.

This project aimed to integrate a set of new possibilities that required the extension of the user interface to suit them, among which are primarily the ability to get through the network information sheets associated with each element or interactivity with these chips. For this was redesigned user interface making it more friendly and extensible, noting especially the inclusion of the ability to view and interact with HTML pages and Flash Javascript support in a Windows environment integrated into the application itself. This new feature developed would obtain all the information associated with each element of local data sources from remote sources via the Internet and can view and contents of the application relate to tourism portals, for example, Turgalicia.

Georeferencing of multimedia data.

Another developing modules allows embedding multimedia data on the ground, thanks to geographic information that can be incorporated therein, and the large number of existing databases on the Internet about it. So far it had implemented the ability to display images, usually photographs, directly over the spot of the territory where they were taken, and additional metadata, such as links to specific web site.
